Biography

Woody should need little introduction to anybody on the R'n'B scene, as a former lead vocalist, CO-producer and drummer for 'Atlantic' group Kleeer (with whom he recorded 7 LP's from 1979 till 1986) his voice and song-writing produced such tunes as "Keep Your Body Working"; "Get Tough"; "Intimate Connection" and "Never Cry Again".

Originally, Woody's considerable s as drummer brought him session work for Salsoul Records-he toured with the universal robot band and played on many of the so-called "loft classics"("Jingo", "Thousand fingered man" "Dancin & Prancing")

Whilst at Salsoul he was introduced to another session vocalist Jocelyn Brown who on hearing his voice persuaded him to do lead vocals as well!

Kleeer were signed in the height of the disco fever-their early albums and 12"s reflected this and produced several crossover dance-floor hits as well as allowing the group to travel the world on tour to spread the Kleeer sound.

As the 80's progressed the group matured into a sophisticated R'n'B unit and like a lot of groups at the time slimmed down to just it's original members with the arrival of the drum machines and synths replacing strings and brass section.

Their 1984 album "intimate connection" was a critical high point of their career production credits were shared with Deodato-the resulting album was in many ways was a sound 10 years ahead of its time.

Atlantic had problems marketing the project releasing "next time its for real" as the 12" in America-instead of the more obvious title track. A further album "seeeekret" followed and although a strong follow up, staff changes at Atlantic sealed their fate, the album received no promotion and the group were dropped.

During this period of not being signed to any label woody kept himself busy working with other artists such as Luther Vandross, Narada Michael Walden, Kashif & Lisa Fisher and Melissa Morgan-moving to Washington were Old English tracked him down (!!) And brought him over in his own right to do two p.a. tours of the UK to promote a re-recording of the earlier Kleeer hit "intimate connection".

Whilst in the U.K. to promote "intimate" the tracks for Woody's solo project "never say never" were layed down. The album received rave reviews from Touch magazine "the quality of his vocals are second to none and believe me you need this in your collection, wicked album". Steve Hobbs of Blues & Soul "one of the albums of the year".

Blues & Soul Magazine "Woody's debut set is a classy soul album that displays his undoubted vocal quality, overall a very impressive album".

Most of Woody's music has been sampled by many people, the main person to sample Woody's music was Tupac which hit number one around most of the world with "California love".

Now we are going to do it all over again we believe that Woody's first solo album was the next step on from the Kleeer sound, the first album had a distinctive 80's sounding, but this time we are going to take woody Cunningham in to 21st Century with a 'jazzy' style album.

We feel this second album will appeal to a broader range of music listeners, very radio friendly and keep all of Woody's fans happy too.
